Snow Day

Snow in Mississippi is like some sort of urban legend. Everyone knows someone, who knows someone, whose sister's neice's half brother has seen real snow in Mississippi. This past week dispelled the myth of Mississippi snow! We got snow. Almost eight inches of snow at my house and it stuck around for a couple of days. The girls finally got to build their first snowman. And we found a really good use for loaf pans (well, other than making warm delicious bread).

We were a snow fort making MACHINE! Three loaf pans and a couple of hours in the snow and we had a fairly unstable, but totally fun snow fort.

There was quite a bit of snow consumed by all (except Jena is WAY too cool to eat snow).

First snow of the winter

So far, the children have seen a maximum of 1 inch of real snow in their lifetimes. That inch fell yesterday. The girls were very excited to go out and play in it. It snowed last winter but all of it melted before the day was over. This year the snow stuck. Granted, it IS only 12 degrees outside right now (in Mississippi, mind you), but the snow made it through the night. I personally, would rather be back on the beach...

I crocheted this hat for Ashni from some alpaca yarn that I got from a friend. I decided to see if it would felt and it felted very nicely. Now, it's Bijou's hat. Fortunately it was not Ashni's only hat.

I had to remind Bijou not to eat the snow - especially the snow that was brown with bits of leaves in it...

Snowmen and Snowflakes

The drop in temperature says it's time to switch out our seasonal crafts. It is time to put away our fall leaf "stained glass" and put up some winter inspired decor. Although, generally I despise Disney and all that Disney produces, I love familyfun.go.com (shh, don't tell anyone). There are always project ideas there that the girls enjoy.

Today we made the corn starch clay that I found here http://http//familyfun.go.com/winter/winter-crafts/more-winter-crafts/cornstarch-clay-802347/ and the girls put together some incredibly creative snowmen. Their snow man building is extra impressive seeing as they have never seen more than a half inch of real snow in their lives. They really had fun. Unfortunately, the longer their snowmen sit, the more they "melt" into schlumpy snowmen. I'm not sure if I mixed my ingredients wrong or what, but I guess that makes them extra realistic!

Bijou's has the big rock star sunglasses on. She did really well putting most of this together herself. I cut the scarf for her though.

Jena's and his fancy black eyed pea belt.

Ashni's looks like a rapper to me. HA, he's all "blinged" out!

We also made sparkly silver snowflake window clings, also found here http://familyfun.go.com/winter/winter-crafts/snowflake-crafts/glittery-window-clings-674868/ We won't know until tomorrow how they turned out, but I think the excitement is killing the girls. I'm sure they will be up bright and early ready to peel them from the paper. Hopefully, they don't get to them before I wake up or they may have disjointed snowflakes.
